The Maple City Electric U-19 Chatham Thunder won gold at the 39th Annual Cambridge Ringette Tournament this past weekend, kicking off the New Year with a stellar performance.

After losing their opening game of the tournament, Chatham fought back to edge Gloucester-Cumberland 4-3 in the final.

In their first game, of the tournament, Chatham fell 3-1 to Waterloo, with Hannah Doforno, who had a strong tournament offensively, picking up the Thunder’s lone goal, with the assist going to Kara Hueniken. Chatham fought back in their next start, beating Elora-Fergus 3-2. Kara Huenekin had a goal and an assist, while Tristen Stewart and Kayla Therrien also scored for the Thunder in the loss.

On day two of the tournament, Chatham hit their stride, opening the day with a 4-2 win over Cambridge. Hannah Doforno scored twice and picked up an assist, while Courtney Roberts, and Carys Owen also scored.

Kara Hueniken scored a hat trick, and Doforno added two more goals for the Thunder in a 5-1 drudging of Mississauga in their last game before the gold medal final, setting the stage for a meeting with Gloucester-Cumberland.

In the final, Chatham fought had to defeat a strong opponent, with Doforno, Tristen Stewart, and Kayla Therrien scoring, before Courtney Roberts netted the game and tournament winning goal in their 4-3 victory. Alissa Reid backstopped Chatham throughout the tournament in net.
