Coach’s Corner With Perry Haines
Perry Haines is a ringette and soccer coach, originally from Owen Sound, but who now lives and coaches in Chatham, Ontario.
Currently coaching the Chatham Thunder U-10 Ringette team, and CKSA soccer teams in the summer, Haines has coached his ringette team to back-to-back perfect seasons, and they’re in line for their third straight perfect season, which would give the Thunder a record of 60-0 over the last three seasons.
Below are Perry Haines’ answers to CKSN’s Questions about coaching:
1. What is your career coaching highlight/top memory?
Many great memories of happy kids on and off the playing field/arena. Being able to watch the girls that I coach grow up and become fantastic people.
2. What is the biggest challenge you face as a coach?
Managing parents/caregivers.
3. Why did you get into coaching? And what keeps you coaching?
I felt that sports has been good to me so I want to give back. Having my own children remain in sports and meeting other great kids and families makes it easy to remain involved.
4. Who was your favourite coach? Why?
My favourite coach was one that I had when I was probably 8 years old for hockey. He was a positive influence on my life and I still stop in when in my hometown to visit him.
5. If you could give one piece of advice to other coaches, or prospective coaches, what would it be?
Choose to coach for the right reasons – to help and develop children/participants both in the sporting environment and with regard to their well-being outside of the sporting environment. Respect all participants regardless of background, skill level. See the positive in every situation. If you choose to coach for status or ego, or to favour your own child’s progress, then you are in it for the wrong reasons. Children and other parents will very quickly see through that.
Coach’s Corner is a weekly feature on CKSN, where one local coach will be highlighted, answering questions about their career highlights, and their coaching philosophy. If you’d like to participate in coaches corner, or know a coach we should feature, email ian@cksn.ca.
