The Chatham Maroons now have a commanding lead in the GOJHL Western Conference best-of-seven series against the Strathroy Rockets following a 4-1 win Sunday night at home.

Goalie Jacob Keogh, who was named the game’s star, was spectacular in the win, stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced.

Kyle Brothers opened the scoring in the first period, with Michael Verboom and Nate Pietens collecting assists in the game. Strathroy would respond only a minute later to tie the game.

In the second frame, Charlie Izaguirre netted a powerplay marker, with defensemen Steven Szekesy and Tanner Ferguson picking up the assists.

Verboom would score from Brothers and Adam Arseneault before the period ended to give the Chatham Maroons a 3-1 lead heading to the third period.

Chatham’s powerplay continued to click in the third period, as Steven Szekesy, with Brothers and Ferguson assisting, scored the final goal of the game, icing the win for the Maroons.

Keogh however, was the real story in the win as the Maroons were outshot by Strathroy 40-27. The netminder has been a difference maker since coming over in a trade from Cambridge earlier this season. Since that time, he’s 18-4 including playoffs, and was the Western Conference goaltender of the month in December.

Chatham will attempt to close out the series Tuesday in Strathroy, puck drop is 7:30pm.
