The Mississippi Surge received a record number of votes last week for the Surge Player Spotlight, which was won by Blenheim’s Brett Vandehogen.

Vandehogen joined the Surge, who play in the Southern Professional Hockey League earlier this season after being released by the CHL’s Brampton Beast. After learning of the record voting earning himself the Spotlight, Vandehogen was grateful to Mississippi’s fans.

“It’s an honour,” Vandehogen said in a Surge news release. “I appreciate everything the fans have done, and continue to do for us. I hope that when they come to watch us play, our performance is indicative of their expectations.”

In 17 games since joining the Surge, Vandehogen, a former University of Windsor Lancers captain, had 3 goals and 2 assists.

““He’s really impressed me with his work ethic. I’ve enjoyed getting to him the last few weeks,” said Surge defenseman Nicholas Kugali in the team release.

Finishing their regular season this weekend, the Mississippi Surge will open their 2014 playoff run March 27 against first place Pensacola.
