John McGregor’s Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst, and ESPC’s Andre Pinsonneault are headed to OFSAA after winning SWOSSAA badminton on Tuesday.

In boys singles, Pain Court’s Andre Pinsonneault captured the SWOSSAA title, one week after winning the Kent crown.

“The feeling was unbelievable,” said Andre Pinsonneault. “I had been waiting for that moment for a long time, and as for OFSAA, I’m just glad to be going.”

Pinsonneault defeated the LSSAA champion Luke Van Reenen from Sarnia St. Clair in dominating fashion, 21-4, 21-14. The duo were followed by Kent runner up, Christian Bechard of Chatham-Kent Secondary School who was third.

Carleton and Herfst, representing John McGregor Secondary School, won the girls doubles final over Windsor Massey in a three game thriller, capped by a 21-11 victory in the final game. The duo, who won Kent last week, are both in grade 11 at JMSS.

“Winning SWOSSAA was amazing, a dream come true,” said Herfst.

“There was some great competition there and it was not an easy win. We had many very close games,” added Carleton about the SWOSSAA victory..

When asked about their chances at OFSAA, the duo just hope to do their best, and soak in the experience.

“We hope to play to the best of our ability and put our hearts into every match,” stated Herfst. “All in all, I’m sure it will be an awesome experience that I will never forget.”

“For OFSAA, Ashley and I hope to play the best we can,” continued Carleton. “We aren’t sure what to expect but we think we have potential to do well if we play our best. It should be a fun experience.”

Both athletes are multi-sport threats at JMSS, as Carleton is an accomplished basketball player, while Herfst also has Kent tennis titles on her resume.

The trio of Chatham-Kent athletes will travel to Markham from May 1-3 for OFSAA.
