The U15 Chatham Strikers were back in action at home against the perennial powerhouse Southend United on Wednesday evening with Chatham looking for their first goal and win of the new season.

Chatham showed they were better than their 3-0 road loss in Ilderton last week would suggest as they came out flying. They attacked and pressured Southend all over the park.

Eventually the Strikers were rewarded with a free kick from 30 yards out, that Brooke MacKinnon precisely kicked over the Southend defenders and into the path of a streaking Rhea VanHelden who redirected the kick home for an early 1-0 lead. Chatham continued to play strong up to the half, limiting Southend’s chances while generating some good offence of their own.

The second half was much of the same as Chatham continued to attack the Southend net and were rewarded with a second goal when Jayden Malott-VanDusen fired in a beautiful cross from the wing that Paulina Maslak tucked in the far corner of the net.

The 2-0 lead would be all Chatham would need as their defence and goaltender Brooke Foster shut the door on Southend the rest of the way.

Chatham is off for a week before hosting Oakridge on Monday June 9th.
