EnviroClean Chatham-Kent Cougar of the Week: Alex Formosa

Enviro-Clean-Car-Dog-WashAlex Formosa, who plays for the Chatham-Kent Cougars Junior Varsity football team, is the Chatham-Kent Cougars Player of the Week, sponsored by EnviroClean Car & Dog Wash, for the week ending June 18.

Alex Formosa lead the Cougars to their first victory of the season contributing not only defensively but also on special Teams in the Cougars’ 23-0 win over the Sarnia Sturgeons.

“Alex is a well rounded football player that can do it all,” says Cougars JV Head Coach Kevin Pugh. “He can play just about any position on the field and is a beast anywhere he plays.”

Alex is the only player that has played under Coach Pugh every minor and travel season since they started with the Cougars. He has played wide receiver, LB, DB and even QB, yet he excels on the defensive side of the ball where his determination, instincts and picture perfect tackling is showcased weekly. He can also kick when needed and is a returner on special teams. Alex is surrounded with a very supportive Cougar football family with Dad Ian, who works as the video coach for the team, and has gratuitously given his time over the years in this role.

Formosa had 4 sacks, a forced fumble, and 2 solo tackles from his CLB spot for the Cougars against Sarnia. He also had some key returns and kicked extra points.

“Alex has a high football IQ, and that is evident when you watch him play,” says Cougars president Selwyn Jordan. “Alex Formosa, his parents Ian, Stacey, and close family friend Gord Pepper have been incredibly loyal to our Cougar organization by volunteering, and coaching in our Cougar Minor program with no kids involved. Alex has been able to take what he has learned playing travel and has used this knowledge to help him run offense, defense, and teach football fundamentals in our Minor program.”

The John McGregor Secondary School grade 10 student completed his second year of high school junior football never coming off the field, starting at quarterback and LB for the low number squad. Formosa was named the Panthers’ offensive MVP.

“Congratulations to Alex Formosa on his all around performance and his contributions in the JV Cougars first victory of the season,” added JV head coach Kevin Pugh.

The Chatham-Kent Junior Varsity Cougars and Alex Formosa will suit up again Sunday, June 22 against the Twin City Predators at home at 2pm.
