Wallaceburg’s Madison Broad won her first gold of the 2014 Canadian Age-Group Swimming Championships Wednesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Chatham Y Pool Sharks swimmer won gold Wednesday in her first event, the 200m backstroke, with a new personal best time of 2:19.59. The time was also a qualifying time for the Senior Nationals, Broad’s first such accomplishment, which she feels is a major step in her progress.

“I feel that it’s a big step, but there is always room for improvement,” said the 13-year-old swimmer, who is ranked among the top four in five of her eight events. “I plan on improving my strokes next swim season to reach my goal of five Senior National times.”

At last year’s Age-Group Championships, Broad won four gold medals and a silver in Quebec.

Thursday, Broad will be in chase of another gold medal and a Senior National time as she competes in the 50 backstroke.

Later this week she’ll also race in the 50 freestye (Friday), the 100 backstroke (Saturday), and the 200 IM, 50 fly, and 400 freestyle (Sunday).

Two Blenheim swimmers, Brendan Van Herk and Shania Van Herk are also competing this week in Winnipeg.
