Chatham’s Bridget Carleton continues to dominate on the World stage with Team Canada at the FIBA U17 World Championships in the Czech Republic.

After stumbling through the round robin, Canada made a statement Wednesday defeating Brazil 52-40, with Carleton leading the way again for Canada.

In the round robin games, Carleton had team and game high performances of 20-, 14-, and 21-points, and followed it up in the round of 16 Wednesday with a 19-point performance against Brazil.

Carleton was 5-for-7 shooting, and went 6-for-6 on free throws. Carleton also pulled down 6 rebounds and had 2-assists, and 3-steals in the victory.

Due to their poor pool finish, Canada and Carleton will now play the winner of the USA and Mexico, which will undoubtedly be the powerhouse Americans, the favourite to win the tournament. Carleton however, is still optimistic about the game.

“I am excited to get to the quarterfinals,” said Carleton in a Basketball Canada news release. “We definitely proved we can play well and we can win. It’s definitely exciting to be top 8 and we’re just going to go from here and see what happens.”

Last summer, as a member of the Canadian U16 team at the FIBA Americas, Carleton captained Canada to a silver medal, losing to the USA in the final, which helped qualify Canada for the Worlds.

The quarter-final game will take place July 4 in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The winner will advance to July 5 semi-finals, while the loser will play classification games beginning July 5.
