After a week of voting, Wallaceburg’s Madison Broad is the winner of CKSN’s Chatham-Kent July Athlete of the Month for 2014.

Broad took just over 29% of the vote, after shining on the National level at the Canadian Age-Group Swimming Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba during July.

A 13-year-old swimmer, who competes for the Chatham Y Pool Sharks, Broad won four medals, two gold, and two silver, and also met three Senior National qualifying times.

Madison opened the Age-Group Championships with a gold and Senior National time in the 200m backstroke, with a winning time of 2:19.59, which was also a new personal best. Her second gold came only a day later in the 50m backstroke, with a time of 29.77.

Her silver medals came in the 100m backstroke, and 50m butterfly. In the 100m backstroke, Broad touched in a time of 1:05.26, good for a Senior National time. The Holy Family student, who plans to attend UCC, won her second silver, touching in 29.19 in the 50m fly.

She also had a 7th in the 200m IM, 9th in the 50m free, and 12th in the 400m freestyle.

Many of Broad’s times at the Age-Group Championships would have advanced to her to the semi-finals, and won heat events at the recent 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Ireland.

Runner Up: Bridget Carleton is a two-time 2014 CKSN Athlete of the Month, narrowly missing out on her third such honour in July. Playing for Team Canada’s cadette team at the U17 World Basketball Championships, Chatham’s Bridget Carleton opened the month leading Canada in a loss to the Czech Republic and a win over Brazil with 21- and 19-points respectively. In three other games, Carleton was among Canada’s leaders in points and rebounds. Later in July, Carleton was invited to Canada’s National Junior Team tryouts, where the six-foot-one guard earned a spot for the upcoming U18 FIBA Americas.
