The Martinrea Fabco Kent Fillies Bantam BB team opened up their season this past weekend capturing gold at the St.Thomas Panthers Early Bird Showcase Tournament. The off season was not a hindrance as it appeared the Fillies picked up right where they left off from last season. The Fillies battled hard all weekend, defeating Stoney Creek in the championship game.

The Kent girls began their quest Friday morning taking on the Flamborough Falcons. The Fillies came out strong netting three in the first period and another two in the second period. It wasn’t until 2:33 left in the final frame that Flamborough was able to spoil the shutout for Tori DiGiorgio, in the 5-1 win. The strong team play was evident on the scoresheet with 11 of a possible 15 players netting points. Pacing the way was Ray Spotton with a goal and an assist. Other goal scorers were Bailey Stewart, Jessica Roelofs, Lauren Edwards, and Sarah Doom. Earning assists were Kelsea Ellis, Jocelyn Delgado, Brooke Anderson, Mallory Hooghiem, Brittney Goodhand, and Lauren Kelly.

After a long break between games, the Kent Fillies had to ramp up their game. The Bantam team was facing the Stoney Creek Sabres, a formidable opponent, but came out on top with a 2-0 win. The first period saw plenty of aggressive play by both teams, but no goal scoring. Early in the second frame, Megan Hakr recorded the first goal. Earning an assist on the goal was Sarah Doom. Before the period was over, Ray Spotton added another being helped by Jocelyn Delgado. Marandee Hunter stood tall between the pipes earning her first shutout of the year.

Saturday had the Fillies playing game three of the round robin, meeting up with the Haldimand Rivercats. The Bantam BB Fillies opened the scoring 75 seconds into the game and never looked back with a strong second period seeing them score four more times, en route to a 5-0 win. Leading the way was Lauren Edwards with two goals. Sarah Doom had a goal and assist, while Kaitlyn Van Coilllie earned two helpers. Single goals went to Hakr and Stewart. Single assists went to Delgado and Spotton. DiGiorgio earned her first shutout of the season.

Advancing to the semi-final against the Sarnia Lady Sting, the Fillies came out strong but penalty trouble prevented them from scoring. Finally, with twenty-two seconds left, Megan Hakr broke through and scored the opener with a great second effort. With the goaltender pulled, Lauren Edwards netted an unassisted marker. Mallory Hooghiem added another with a blast from the point, with Hakr and Jocelyn Delgado earning assists. Kent’s 3-0 win was entered into the books sending the Fillies to the finals.

Facing the Stoney Creek Sabres once again in the final, Jocelyn Delgado put the Fillies on the board 3 ½ minutes into the first frame with a pass from Lauren Edwards. With only seconds left, Hailey Johnson picked the top shelf from the point to give Kent County a 2-0 lead. Stoney Creek wasn’t about to go away, however cutting the Fillies’ lead in half early in the second. Just 11 seconds later, a lead pass by Spotton sent Delgado and Edwards in on a 2-on-1 with Delgado beating the goaltender. Edwards added an empty netter to seal the fate on the Falcons. Marandee Hunter faced several tough shots and kept her team in the game allowing them to break through for a 4-1 victory, and the tournament title.
