Chatham-Kent August Athlete of the Month: Breanne Nicholas
After a week of voting, Blenheim’s Breanne Nicholas is the winner of CKSN’s Chatham-Kent August Athlete of the Month for 2014.
Nicholas took almost 19% of the vote, in one of the closest votes of 2014, with four other athletes right behind her. Nicholas edged out the competition after shining for Team Canada at the FISU Championships, winning gold, and playing a starring role at the Can-Am U20 Rugby Series for Canada.
First, Nicholas helped Canada win gold at the FISU Championships in Brazil, defeating France in the gold medal game.
Later in the month, Nicholas was named the Player of the Series for Team Canada, as they defeated the USA in both games in the Can-Am U20 Women’s Rugby Series. Nicholas scored one try in the series, and set up several others.
Nicholas is now back at Western University, where she competes for the Mustangs women’s rugby team.
Runner Up: Bridget Carleton helped Team Canada’s National Junior Basketball team win a silver medal at the FIBA Americas tournament held in Colorado, USA, qualifying Canada for the World Junior Championships. Carleton was 5th in the tournament in blocks, and first in three point percentage. Carleton was one of Canada’s leading scorers, despite being one of the younger players in the tournament. She score 9-points in a semi-final win over Brazil, and 7-points in the gold medal game. Carleton is a two-time winner of CKSN’s Chatham-Kent Athlete of the Month, and a two-time runner up.
