CKSN asked all candidates running for Chatham-Kent council and mayor, to give us their backgrounds in sports and recreation, and describe their goals and views for not only sports and recreation in Chatham-Kent, but making Chatham-Kent a healthier, and more active place to live.

The Chatham-Kent Municipal election day is October 27, 2014.

Here are council candidate Michael Bondy’s responses. Bondy is running for council in Ward 6 – Chatham.

1. Background in sports and recreation:

I have coached and acted as an assistant coach in the Chatham Minor Hockey Association. I have also been very involved with the Chatham Tennis Club for many years and more recently as a volunteer with youth activities as I have three of my five children actively playing tennis. My oldest is a swimmer and my running partner. My youngest baby has yet to decide.

2. What specific ideas or goals do you have for Chatham-Kent, to improve or maintain recreational programs and facilities, and support our athletes and sports organizations? Or to help build opportunities for future growth in these areas?

My goal for the future of sport in CK is simple. Have ALL children participate in some form of sport, and hopefully outside. Whether that be on a tennis court or an outdoor arena. If re-elected I will pressure the MCK to utilize vacant spaces and convert them to inexpensive soccor pitches, tennis clay courts and hopefully an outdoor arena. These are very doable projects as is evident in cities like Toronto and London.

3. How will you work to make Chatham-Kent a healthier, more active place to live?

The key to a healthy CK is engaging our young people and strongly encourage participation in sports – taking a break from iPhones. Make smoking almost impossible around young people. Encourage the MCK to assist in funding sports participation to children. I will also promote greater usage of our remaining outdoor pools as I believe learning and enjoying swimming is more that a sport, it is a safety skill. We have great pools that are not promoted strongly enough.
