CKSN asked all candidates running for Chatham-Kent council and mayor, to give us their backgrounds in sports and recreation, and decribe their goals and views for not only sports and recreation in Chatham-Kent, but making Chatham-Kent a healthier, and more active place to live.

The Chatham-Kent Municipal election day is October 27, 2014.

Here are mayoral candidate Reno Lachapelle’s responses. Lachapelle is running for Mayor of Chatham-Kent.

1. Background in sports and recreation:

I have lived in Windsor for about 12 years and recently moved to Chatham to raise my family. I haven’t been involved in Chatham-Kent recreation programs but I have done a few sporting events in Windsor which I would like to promote here in Chatham-Kent. The Windsor Classic is a ball hockey tournament put on by Trevor Whaling of Investors Group and its all done for charity. It’s going on its third year and I hope it continues to thrive as it is for a good cause. I recently also had a son this past October. I would like for him to play in many sports when he is older and I want to become involved in helping his sports teams as well as recreational programs within the city.

2. What specific ideas or goals do you have for Chatham-Kent, to improve or maintain recreational programs and facilities, and support our athletes and sports organizations? Or to help build opportunities for future growth in these areas?

I am a huge sports fan, hockey is my favourite sport. I want to get the community more involved in playing 5 on 5 tournaments such as hockey and soccer. We can put on these tournaments for local charities within C-K. Also, helping out kids who don’t have the money to play certain sports is a big thing I would like to work on. If people donate their old sports equipment, we can facilitate a charity that will help these kids play in rec. leagues and what not.

3. How will you work to make Chatham-Kent a healthier, more active place to live?

Promoting a variety of sports for all ages. Tournaments, fundraisers, charity events. Use the YMCA facility to promote after school and weekend rec. leagues.

4. Anything else you’d like to add?

First off, I think its fantastic that you are promoting this Sports Network in Chatham-Kent. Being a season ticket holder of The Detroit Red Wings, I believe it’s very important to promote local sports.
