When you enter a season having not lost a regular season game in multiple seasons, and as the three-time reigning champion, you’re expected to win.

The UCC Lancers however, sent a clear message to the reigning champion Wallaceburg Tartans in their LKSSAA football opener, unseating the Tartans with a 19-14 comeback win.

After Wallaceburg opened the game quickly, scoring a pair of touchdowns from Trevor Bogaert and Simon Yazbeck to put UCC down 14-0, the Lancers began to turn the tide.

UCC’s Justin Stevens powered the Lancers to victory, scoring three touchdowns on short runs of 1-, 3-, and 5-yards in the game.

The game was the first of the season for both in the new 12-man LKSSAA schedule, which will see both teams playing Sarnia-Lambton schools, as well as their typical Chatham-Kent competition.

In the other LKSSAA 12-man game Friday, Sarnia Northern defeated Sarnia St. Patrick’s 49-10.

Wallaceburg will travel to face St. Patrick’s next Thursday, while UCC will visit CKSS next Thursday.
