Home Sweet Home For Lakers
The Wallaceburg Lakers no longer sit at the bottom of the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League. That dubious distinction not belongs to the Mooretown Flags, after Wallaceburg picked up their third home ice victory of the season Wednesday night.
Facing the Alvinston Flyers, Wallaceburg was looking to climb out of the league basement with a win, and the team came out flying, and wearing their new green jerseys for the first time this season, and outplayed and outchanced Alvinston all night.
The Flyers’ Karsten Berg opened the scoring after Joe Archer fed Berg in the slot, and the Flyers’ leading scorer wristed a shot over Joel Sowinski’s glove hand, popping the water bottle from the net.
The Wallaceburg Lakers however wouldn’t be held down long. On the penalty kill, Matt Clark beat both Alvinston Flyers to the puck in the offensive zone, and then forced a turnover seconds later to Lucais Meyskens, who buried a backhand shot for the shorthanded goal.
Entering the third period tied 1-1, Wallaceburg defenseman Jacob Theoret broke the deadlock, sending what looked to be a harmless wrist shot from the point through traffic, but his shot caught the post and ended up in the back of the net.
Theoret’s goal would stand as the game winner, as Wallaceburg took the 2-1 victory.
Wallaceburg travels to Amherstburg Sunday, Essex next Tuesday, and hosts last place Mooretown next Wednesday.
