Russia Wins Gold At World U17 Hockey Challenge
The event, hosted just down the highway from Chatham-Kent in Sarnia and Lambton Shores, featured multiple Canadian squads, as well as the top U17 teams from across the globe.
In the end, Russia took a 2-1 win in the gold medal game over the United States.
Maxim Bain opened the scoring in the first period for Russia, with an assist going to Vitali Abramov. In the second frame, Russia jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a goal by Alexander Yakovenko, with assists going to German Rubtsov and Nikita Popugay.
In the third period, USA’s Max Jones, one of the tournaments top players, would cut the lead to 2-1 with a powerplay marker, however Russia would hold off the USA and capture the tournament title.
In the bronze medal game William Fällström scored the game winning goal late in the second period for Team Sweden, as they defeated Finland 3-1. Oskar Steen and Linus Weissbach also scored for Sweden, while Riku Sihvonen scored Finland’s goal.
