2014 started off with numerous individual and team successes. We could fill this page with hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball tournament wins, but instead, we’re zeroing in on the biggest stories of the month. Here are the top highlights from Chatham-Kent sports in January 2014:

  • Dane Fox Signs NHL Contract: Thamesville’s Dane Fox was tearing up the OHL, and rang in the New Year by signing a contract with the Vancouver Canucks.
  • Joel Sowinski Wins Monthly Award: 2013 was a year to forget for the Wallaceburg Lakers, so when Joel Sowinski was named the December player of the month for the Great Lakes Junior C league, it marked a new page for the Lakers entering 2014.
  • Fox Scores 50 goals: Dane Fox jumps onto our top stories yet again, scoring his 49, 50, and 51st goals of the OHL season in only his 43rd game. Fox led the OHL in goals all season.
  • Chad Laprise Debuts On The Ultimate Fighter: Chatham’s Chad Laprise made his first appearance on The Ultimate Fighter Nations, vying for a UFC contract in the reality TV show.
  • Max Allin Announces Pro Signing: Chatham’s Max Allin announced that following his final OUA season with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, he would be turning pro with Australia’s South Peninsula Sharks basketball team.
  • Run CK Launches: A new governing body, known as Run CK launched, with a schedule of several road races across Chatham-Kent for 2014.
  • Brad Hockin Commits To Western: After starring all month for the CKSS Golden Hawks senior boys volleyball team, Chatham’s Brad Hockin committed to play OUA volleyball for the Wester University Mustangs.
  • Kyle Brothers scores 100 points: Chatham Maroons superstar Kyle Brothers continued his dominance of the GOJHL, scoring his 100th point of the season.
  • Laprise Wins First Fight: Not only was Chad Laprise present on The Ultimate Fighter, but he won his first fight, something, we all know, we’d see much more of in the future.
