Brandon Montour made his long awaited NCAA Division I hockey debut, suiting up for the UMass Minutemen this Tuesday in an 8-3 loss to Northeastern.

Montour, a Tilbury product who played for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones growing up, was a 2nd round draft pick of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks this past year after lighting up with USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks.

The reigning USHL Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year, Montour was originally slated to play for the University of Massachusetts to start this season, however due to a clearinghouse issue was not eligible to join the Minutemen until Tuesday’s game.

Prior to joining the UMass Minutemen this week, Montour was again playing for the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks where he was among the league’s scoring leaders. The defenseman collected 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points in only 17 games played.

Montour and the Minutemen are back in action December 28 and 29 at the Catamount Cup where they’ll play Merrimack and Air Force.
