Klinton Kenney was the difference. In fact, the Blenheim Blades, who had a heralded defensive squad entering the 2014-2015 season, proved that the hype was for real in game one of the Great Lakes Junior C playoffs, as the Blades shutout the Alvinston Flyers 1-0, allowing only 15 shots against.

Kenney, who only had one regular season shutout, matched his season total in the opening game of the playoffs.

The only offense in the game came on a goal by Dylan Muzzatti in the second period, with assists going to Tyler Boughner and Dallas Richard.

The team’s will meet again in Alvinston Friday night before returning to Blenheim Sunday for a 7:15pm game.

In other Great Lakes Junior C playoff action, the Dresden Kings fell 6-5 to the Lakeshore Canadiens to open their best-of-seven playoff series.

Dillon Liberty helped the Kings get out of the gate strong, scoring a pair of first period goals to give Dresden the lead after one. Lakeshore however would storm back to tie the game in the second period at 3-3, with John Montgomery recording the other Dresden Kings goal.

In the third, Kevin Ritzer and Will Tetzlaff each scored for the Kings, who could slow Lakeshore’s high powered offense enough in the final frame, falling 6-5. Jordan Durston had 3 assists for Dresden, and Derek Daly had 2 helpers in the loss.
