Chatham-Kent January Athlete of the Month: Travis Konecny
After a week of voting, Travis Konecny is CKSN’s Chatham-Kent January Athlete of the Month for 2015.
Konecny, who captains the OHL’s Ottawa 67s is a former Chatham-Kent Cyclones superstar from Clachan, Ontario.
In January, Konecny was named the first star at the BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects game scoring 2 goals and adding an assist, leading Team Orr to a 6-0 victory in the game.
Konecny was ranked 26th among North American skaters in January by the NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau, for this year’s NHL draft, but undoubtedly helped his ranking with a strong month.
In 11 OHL games during the month of January, Konecny had 8 goals and 10 assists for 18 points, his strongest month this season in the Ontario Hockey League.
Overall, Konecny took 39% of the vote in CKSN’s Athlete of the Month voting. A nominee for the 2014 Athlete of the Year award, this is Konecny’s first Chatham-Kent Athlete of the Month honour.
Runner Up: Torrie Handsor of Wallaceburg plays for the St. Clair Saints women’s basketball team in the OCAA. Handsor had a strong first half of her rookie college campaign, and kept things going in January putting up consistent numbers and playing big minutes for the Saints. Handsor a career game January 24 in a win over Redeemer scoring 19-points and adding 6 rebounds. Handsor took 26% of the voting.
