Two local swimmers, Wallaceburg’s Madison Broad, and Cedar Springs’ Brendan Van Herk, both found the silver lining this past weekend at the Ontario Provincial Age Group Championships.

Van Herk, who swims for the Blenheim Blast swim team, set personal bests in the 200m IM (2:11.43) and 400m IM (4:41.08) en route to his pair of silver medals. He was sixth in the 100 m Fly (59.68), 7th in the 200m Fly (2:14.94), and ninth in the 200m Breast (2:33.85). Van Herk finished twelfth in both the 100m Back (1:01.86) and 200m Back (2:13.93) event. He finished sixteenth overall in his 100m Freestyle (56.26). Van Herk set new personal best times in seven of his eight events throughout the weekend.

Madison Broad added to her impressive medal tallies this season collecting two silver medals, one in the 100m backstroke with a new best time of 1:02.58, and her other silver in the 200m backstroke with another new best time of 2:15.98.

Broad also finished 7th in the 200m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke, 8th in the 100m freestyle, 12th in the 100m butterfly, and 13th in the 200m freestyle.

Broad will now prepare for the 2015 Canadian Trials, which are being held in Scarborough from April 1-4.

Blenheim Blast swimmer Rain Pfaff finished 19th in the 100m breaststroke in her provincial debut.

Wallaceburg’s Nicole Depooter and Wheatley’s Maddy Lavoie also had strong finishes at the event.

The Blenheim Blast will compete March 27 and 28 in the Windsor Aquatic Club’s Long Course Invitational.
