Upset Complete, Maroons Eliminated
London, the 7th ranked team entering the playoffs, eliminated the 2nd ranked Maroons with a 3-2 overtime victory.
The Maroons looked to be out to a good start Saturday on the road after Brennan Feasey put his team on the board in the first period with Trevor Richardson assisting.
The night’s hero Tanner Ferreira would score early in the second period to tie things at one, but the Maroons would respond again. Nearing the midway mark of the second period, Steven Szekesy scored a powerplay marker with Feasey and Nate Pietens picking up helpers.
Matt Bean then scored to tie the game at 2-2.
With both goaltenders, London’s Justin Tugwell and Chatham’s Jake Patterson shutting the door in the third period, the game went to overtime.
Overtime however, didn’t last long as Tanner Ferreira scored his second of the game only 32 seconds in to end the series and secure the victory for his London Nationals.
London dominated the play in the game, outshooting Chatham 48-24.
The Nationals will now advance to play the Leamington Flyers in the second round of the GOJHL playoffs.
Chatham says goodbye to several overage players including Bo Bessette, Jake Patterson, Brennan Feasey, Trevor Richardson, Connor Doran, Steven Szekesy, Jared Dennis, Nate Pietens, and Connor Annett.
The Maroons are also likely to lose Levi Tetrault, who will play for the OHL’s Guelph Storm Sunday in Sarnia only a day after being eliminated.
