Kent Bridge’s Luke Van Rycheghem is soaking up the sun, and the gaze of scouts this month in the Dominican Republic, as the 17-year-old is representing Canada’s National Junior Baseball team in the Dominican Summer League camp.

The six-foot-three catcher is making his National Team debut for Canada.

His Canadian National Junior team will play 12 games against Major League Baseball affiliated clubs in the Dominican Summer League, as well as a May 29 game against the Dominican Republic’s top prospects, who are eligible to sign with MLB clubs this summer.

Van Rycheghem, who is currently in grade 11 at UCC in Chatham, plays club baseball for the U17 Ontario Blue Jays.

Van Rycheghem is eligible for the 2016 MLB Draft. The Dominican Summer League series will provide the Junior National team a chance to prepare for the WBSC U18 World Cup, which will take place from August 28 – September 6 in Osaka, Japan.
