This past weekend the Junior U19 Wallaceburg Airhawks brought home the Bronze medal from the Provincial Championships held in Guelph, Ontario. The Airhawks were ranked 8th in Division 5 and defeated the 3rd ranked Brantford Briers 73-68 in overtime to win bronze.

The Wallaceburg squad did this without a single grade 12 player on the team. The young team was willing to challenge themselves by playing in the older age group and is made up of one grade 9, three grade 10’s and four grade 11’s.

Below is a game by game summary of the Wallaceburg Airhawks provincial tournament.

Game 1: Flamborough Fire – 60 – Wallaceburg Airhwaks – 39: Top scorers were Jana Kucera – 14, Brittany McLaren – 9, and Sawyer Fischer – 9.

Game 2: Peterborough Power 60 – Wallaceburg Airhwaks 61 (OT): Top scorers were Jana Kucera – 17, Logan Kucera – 15, Jaimi Chauvin – 8, and Brittany McLaren and Sawyer Fischer – 7.

Game 3: Brockville Blazers 43 – Wallaceburg Airhwaks 53: Top scorers were Logan Kucera – 15, Sawyer Fischer – 9, and Brittany McLaren and Jana Kucera – 7.

Game 4 Bronze Medal: Brantford Briers 68 – Wallaceburg Airhawks 73 (OT): Top scorers were Sawyer Fischer – 19, Jana Kucera – 18, Jaimi Chauvin – 12, and Logan Kucera and Ryann Fink – 8. The score was tied at 17 after the first quarter and then the Airhawks led by 5 or more until the final 2 minutes when a 1 point lead exchanged hands 5 times. Jana Kucera hit a 3 to bring the Airhawks within 2 and Sawyer Fischer calmly sunk 2 foul shots with 1.2 seconds on the clock to force the overtime, where Wallaceburg secured the bronze.
