Cougars Can’t Claw Wins On Weekend
The Chatham-Kent Cougars Varsity team lost to Guelph 39-9. Chatham-Kent received solid offensive and defensive contributions, but a weak 2nd quarter and poor special teams play contributed to the defeat.
Chatham started on defense with a quick 2 and out and recieved the ball with great field position. Mainly on the running by Tanner Shuian, the Cougars drove the ball to the Guelph 4 yard line. Chatham-Kent then had 3 chances for a TD, but could not execute. Tanner Shuian led the way for Chatham-Kent rushing for over 100 yards, while Gabe Gagner rushed for another 54-yards.
Kelton Evans gave the team a spark in the 4th quarter with a drive that was mainly throwing, connecting on a deep pass to Jake Anderson for a TD.
On defense, Carter Wood had 2 sacks, Josh Kita had another 2, and Josh Graham had 1 interception. Eric Penney, Jake Lindley, Josh Kita, Kenny Levesque, and Rick O’Rourke led the team in tackles.
The Bantam Chatham-Kent Cougars also got off to a slow start against the Sarnia Sturgeon, and were unable to fight back in a 41-24 loss to the Sarnia Sturgeon on Sunday.
The offense was once again led by a great effort from Jonathan Cartier. Cartier scored 4 TD’s on 12 rushes for 203 yards. He also helped out on defense with 3 tackles and 2 interceptions. Cartier now has 11 TD’s in 3 games. Julian Ferrell added 6 carries for 65 yards.
