Ken Houston, locally renowned for his on-ice prowess and tough-as-nails character, was drafted by the Atlanta Flames in 1973. Houston played seven seasons for the Flames, including two after the franchise relocated to Calgary. 1976-77 was Houston’s first full NHL season, and Ken racked up 44 points including 20 goals in his ‘rookie’ campaign. Houston would enjoy six 20-goal seasons over the course of his 10-year NHL career. He was traded along with Pat Riggin to the Washington Capitals following the 1981–82 NHL season. Houston played for the Capitals until October of 1983 when he was dealt along with Brian Engblom to the Los Angeles Kings in the trade that sent Larry Murphy to the Capitals. He retired at the end of the 1983–84 NHL season.
Houston has been enshrined into both the Dresden Minor Hockey and Dresden Jr Kings level of excellence, with his jersey retired not once, but twice inside the Lambton-Kent Memorial Agricultural Centre. Ken spent two years of his junior hockey career suiting up for the Chatham Maroons, scoring 87 points in 100 games, while racking up 387 penalty minutes.
Houston is fondly remembered by team mates and local fans alike for his ability on the ice, and with his hands. Many former Flames still talk about Houston answering the bell when NHL tough-guy Dave Schultz came calling. Schultz would up with a broken jaw, courtesy of Houston.
