This past weekend, the Highgate Jr. Rock Peewee (U14) boys competed in the Ontario Amateur Softball Association’s (OASA’s) annual Provincial Tournament, this year hosted by Innerkip.

Fourteen teams from Eastern and Western Ontario formed the A & B tiers. The 3-1 Highgate team found themselves in the semi-final game Sunday morning, having previously defeated Chatsworth (twice) and Campbellford once, while losing once to Wellesley. Following the double knock-out format, their next loss would be their last game of the season. Battling injury and fatigue, the nine boys dug deep and played hard tying the game late to force the Elma Avengers into extra innings.

Following the international tie-breaker rule each team started their subsequent at bats with a runner on second base. The first extra inning saw both teams strand a runner at third. The second overtime inning was just as tense, however with two out and two strikes on the batter Elma hit a ball up the middle to score the winning run.

Elma would go on to beat Wellesley twice and win gold, while Highgate earned the Provincial B bronze medal and the respect of those watching.
