Flags Use Big Third To Top Lakers In Opener
The Mooretown Flags overcame a third period deficit with three goals in just under six minutes to steal a 3-1 victory over the Wallaceburg Lakers on Saturday night.
The Lakers were 20 minutes away from an early season win, up 1-0 thanks to a first period power-play goal from Trevor Waller. Despite an overhauled roster and allowing 28 shots through two periods of play, the Lakers and new goaltender Derion Ducedre held their own, including killing off eight Mooretown power plays.
The Flags were able to beat Ducedre at the 4:29 mark of the third when Parker Gilhuly grabbed Mooretown’s first goal of the season. Former Laker Frankie White would set up Alec Segers less than four minutes later with Gilhuly adding an assist to the scoresheet on Nolan Riley’s goal at 10:13 of the third.
Cory Lucier and Brett Farr assisted on the lone Lakers goal from Waller, who is expected to be an offensive force this season. Lucier will be interesting to watch this season after a career year on the lacrosse floor this season. Ducedre looked strong in his Lakers debut, making 44 saves.
The Lakers are back in action on Wednesday night with the Dresden Jr Kings visiting Memorial Arena for Wallaceburg’s home opener. Puck drop is 7:30 pm. The action can be heard live on 99.1 FM CKXS, streaming online at ckxsfm.com and on the FREE 99.1 mobile app.
