Local Sports Briefs: September 2

  • CKXS-Morning-Sports-BriefsWallaceburg’s Joel Shepley and the St Catherine’s Saints are 2-0 in round robin play at the President’s Cup tournament. Shepley had a goal and an assist as the Saints beat the Onondaga Riverhawks 13-7. Isiah Kicknosway of Walpole Island and his Six Nations Rivermen are 1-1 after dropping a 14-11 game to the Snake Island Muskies.
  • Luke VanRycheghem and team Canada is on to the “Super Round” at the Under-18 World Cup of Baseball in Japan. Canada’s game against South Africa was postponed in the third inning because of rain but Canada advanced to a third place finish in their pool when Cuba beat Taiwan 3-2. Canada opens up “Super Round” play on Thursday against Japan.
  • The Essex 73’s are looking strong again as they pounded Amherstberg 10-1 in Great Lakes Jr C Exhibition play. The Blenheim Blades will take on the Lambeth Lancers tonight.
  • If you are interested in local baseball then a must read is the “History of Baseball in Chatham-Kent” written by Fred Osmon. The book entails many local facts such as former local players who made it to the “show” as well as all stars of yesteryear. The book also shows every provincial championship team from Chatham-Kent.
