Kings Back To Winning Ways
It took a full calendar month for the Dresden Jr Kings to find a win. After an upset win over the second place Integrity Amherstburg Admirals on Friday night, it took less than 48 hours for Dresden to leave the weekend doubling their win total.
Derek Daly’s lone second-period goal proved to be the game-winner for Dresden at home on Friday, costing Amherstburg their first regulation loss of the season. John Montgomery, Dillon Liberty and Isaac McLean added goals for Dresden while Ryan Holzel and Caleb Paquette scored for the Admirals. New Dresden netminder Travis Moore stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn his first win in his second appearance as Jr King.
Riding a high from the unexpected win, Dresden followed it up by offering the third-place Blenheim Blades their first home loss of the year, a 6-2 final. The Kings fired 37 shots at Klinton Kenney of the Blades and were able to slip 6 of them by Blenheim’s number one goaltender.
The Blades took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission after the opening goal from Kellen Kaniecki and a powerplay marker from Nolan VandenBoorn. Kyle Dawson scored the lone first period goal for Dresden, his eighth of the year, and added to that total on the powerplay at 17:24 of the second period. Dawson collected a loose puck after a point shot from Carter Smith to tie the game. A minute and a half later, a harmless play broke the game wide open when Derek Shaw dumped the puck on net. A late bounce proved hard for Kenney to corral and a steam rolling Macks Holmes picked up the rebound, giving Dresden a lead they would not relinquish.
Dresden outworked and outplayed the Blades in the final twenty minutes and were rewarded with three more goals. The Kings’ fourth goal came from captain Derrick Van Every, who looked like he was playing a video game with two toe drags, one to evade 6’5″ 235 pound Blenheim d-man Bryan Boersma and found a home for the puck under the glove hand shoulder of Kenney. Kevin Ritzer and Isaac McLean finished off the scoring. Travis Moore stopped 22 of 24 shots and wasn’t tested much outside of the first period as the Kings kept Blenheim’s high octane offense of Zack Horvath, Drew Marlatt, Matt Clark and company at bay and off of the scoresheet.
Dresden now leapfrogs Alvinston in the standings into 7th place with a record of 4-8-1-0. Blenheim falls to fourth place, one point behind Lakeshore with a record of 6-3-0-1.
