Frank Dymock Classic A Success!
This past weekend’s Frank Dymock Classic was an overwhelming success for the Wallaceburg Minor Hockey Association and Wallaceburg Hockey Moms.
28 teams took part in the three-day tournament held at Wallaceburg Memorial Arena and Walpole Island’s Sports Complex, bringing more than 1,000 visitors to Chatham-Kent.
Seven teams joined the fray from Wallaceburg with 21 squads from: Caledonia, Dresden, East Lambton, Petrolia, Kent/Tilbury, Richmond Hill, Kingsville, Dunnville, Mooretown, Mount Brydges, Thorold, Dorchester, Woolwich, West London, Tillsonburg and Sarnia.
Tom Cogghe, tournament convenor, is very happy with the community support.
“The tournament was a huge success and we had a lot of compliments. The Hockey Moms fundraising was successful, to the best of their memory the bake sale was the largest ever,” said Cogghe. “Both arenas were open to the public with free admission throughout the tournament. We owe a huge thank you to the Frank Dymock Family, Wallaceburg Hockey Moms, WMHA, all sponsors, registered teams and families, and all of our volunteers and committee members.”
Host teams from Wallaceburg faired well in tournament play. Five of the seven Wallaceburg teams advanced from round robin play. The two Wallaceburg Atom teams faced off against one another in the semi-finals with TC#2 edging TC#1 3-2 to move to the finals, where they earned a silver medal in a tough game against the Atom champs from Richmond Hill.
The two ‘Burg PeeWee squads also played one another in the quarter finals in a close game with TC#1 narrowly defeating TC#2 by a final of 2-1. The Peewee #1 team then faced Dorchester in the semis winning 3-1 to move onto the finals against Thorold team. In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, a tough Thorold team took home gold with Wallaceburg earning silver.
Wallaceburg’s bantam team made it to the Quarter Finals but couldn’t get past Thorold, losing 7-2.
