Lakers Coach Says Disconnect In Hockey Operations Led To Resignation
An already busy off-season for the Wallaceburg Lakers is now unexpectedly even more hectic for the Great Lakes Junior C hockey club.
Less than a week after the new Byrne Laus Hockey Corporation was introduced as new team owners, head coach Derek Ellis and assistant coaches Ryan Paxton and Steve Gagner have resigned from their positions.
Ellis says a disconnect on the hockey side of the program is the root cause of his departure.
“Our assistant coach and (part) owner Joe Byrne Jr and I had a strong disconnect on the hockey operations and the direction of the hockey team,” said Ellis. “For all parties involved, it was probably best that I stepped down and let them follow the direction they wanted to go.”
Ellis told 99.1 CKXS the decision was tough, as he grew personally closer with the team and local players.
“I’ve formed a very good relationship with a lot of players who have played for us. It’s been a very difficult few days for (assistant coach Ryan) Paxton and myself. We’ve talked to the kids and we’ve always really want these kids to have a good place to play. We’re concerned about them, we care about them so this has been tough. But things happen for a reason.”
Ellis and Paxton were brought in after the departure of former head coach and general manager Mark Swayze left the team last season. The duo was only behind the bench for nine games, but seemed to have an influence in the locker room, creating a much more positive environment than the players were used to.
“We made it a family atmosphere,” Ellis added. “I really strongly believe you have to do that. You get players to play for you. Let’s be honest – it’s only hockey but these young men are people too. It’s life long friendships and always makes it fun to be at the rink with them. I wish these young men the best and I will always be in their corner.”
Ellis also requested to extend thanks to Lakers President Jim McCrea, Vice-President Greg Gorski, GM Ritch Kanally and the entire Lakers executive.
“They’re all first class people to work with and I have the utmost respect for all of them.”
GM Kanally, still freshly added to the mix, admittedly was caught off guard by the departure of three-quarters of his coaching staff. Kanally expressed his appreciation for their time and extended best wishes from the Lakers board and executive.
The Lakers are currently on the hunt for a new head coach and assistant coach.
