Cycling isn’t the first sport that comes to mind when you think of sports in Chatham-Kent, but Bothwell’s Nick Wammes is doing his best to change that.

Wammes, who has been one of the country’s top track cyclists since he entered the sport in 2012, has been selected to represent Team Canada at the Junior Track Worlds this July in Aigle, Switzerland.

““It’s the biggest group of athletes we have taken to Junior Worlds for some years,” says Team Canada lead Ian Melvin of the 13-athletes who will represent Canada in a Cycling Canada release. “And that is a reflection of the hard work that has been taking place in the provinces. There’s some really exciting young talent starting to emerge.”

Wammes, a member of the London-based track cycling Team Kallisto-FCV (Forest City Velodrome), won a gold medal in the Team Sprint at the Canadian National held in April, breaking the Canadian record in that competition. Wammes also received a silver medal in the match sprints.

Wammes and his family however, are in need of support to help cover the monumental expenses, including equipment, travelling, training, coach support, and race fees, which are all self-funded. They expect costs to climb to approximately $8000 for the Junior Worlds.

In hopes to gain community support, Wammes has launched a “GoFundMe” page with a goal of raising $6000 toward his costs. To support Nick Wammes in representing team Canada CLICK HERE or visit his GoFundMe page directly at https://www.gofundme.com/22zqtf2c.
