Canadian Rio Olympics Update – Day 10
YOUR 99.1 RIO OLYMPIC REPORT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY VICTORY LINCOLN, 301 RICHMOND STREET IN CHATHAM
How about Andre DeGrasse? The Canadian sprinter proved he may be the future of track in last night’s bronze medal run in the 100 metre. DeGrasse finished, coincidentally, with a time of 9-9-1. Usain Bolt took his third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the 100 metre.
Corunna’s Derek Drouin made jumping 2.29 metres look easy in Rio. Drouin leapt into the high jump finals at the Olympic games after easily clearing his four qualifying jumps of 2.17, 2.22, 2.26 and 2.29. Canadian Mike Mason did not qualify for the finals after missing attempts of 2.17, 2.25 and 2.29. The finals are scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:30 pm
It was an emotional day for Toronto’s Adam van Koeverden who failed to qualify for the men’s K1 1,000 metre ‘A’ final. Retirement may be in the future for van Koeverden who was visibly shaken by his performance. Adam has a gold medal, 2 silver and a bronze medal to his name at prior Olympics and is a two-time world champion.
All four of Canada’s canoe and kayak teams qualified for the semi-finals this morning, but none were able to advance to the medal round.
Matt Hughes IS moving on after qualifying for the men’s 3,000 metre steeplechase final. The 27-year-old Oshawa native finished 11th among 42 runners this morning. The final goes Wednesday morning. Hughes won gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
Also moving on to the medal round is Canada’s synchro swimming duo of Karine Thomas and Jacqueline Simoneau. The tandem finished 7th after their free and technical routine. Some analysts feel Karine and Jacqueline may be dark horses for the podium. The medal round is scheduled for 1pm Tuesday.
Some solid programming tomorrow as Canada’s ladies compete on the pitch AND on the court in quarter-final action.
Our women’s soccer squad meets Germany in a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown Tuesday at 3pm. It’s win or go home. Canada went 22 years without beating Germany in women’s soccer – up until a week ago. Now Christine Sinclair and company have the chance to beat them twice in a week to advance to the semi’s.
And despite dropping their final two games of round robin play, Canada’s women’s basketball team moves on to the quarter-finals. Canada meets France tomorrow at 9:15 pm
Canada’s medal count stands at 13 – 2 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze.
The US is running away with the medal haul, capturing 26 gold, 22 silver and 14 bronze for 72 medals.
