Rio Canadian Olympic Update – Day 12
YOUR 99.1 RIO OLYMPIC REPORT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY VICTORY LINCOLN, 301 RICHMOND STREET IN CHATHAM
Something tells me Derek Drouin can jump even higher today! Congratulations to the Corunna native on a GOLDEN performance in last night’s high jump, capturing his first Olympic gold medal with a winning jump of 2.38 metres.
Canada could be one step closer to another medal tonight as Andre De Grasse returns to the track as a favourite in the 200 metre semi-final. The 21-year-old from Markham already won bronze in the 100 metres and had the fastest time of the day in qualifying for the 200 yesterday. He will once again be in a heat with 100 metre gold medalist Usain Bolt. The finals are Thursday night.
The track may be about to heat up for the Great White North. Ontario’s Melissa Bishop qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s 800-metre with the best overall time.
Still on the track, Canada’s decathlon athlete Damian Warner set an Olympic best time of 10.3 seconds in the 100-metre dash to kick off the first leg of the decathlon in the lead. Canada has only ever medaled in this event once, in 1988.
The Canadian rowing duo of Ryan Cochrane and Hugues Fournel were late additions to the Games after the elimination of a Russian team in the doping scandal. Better late than never, as the two ranked third in the semi-finals today to guarantee a spot in the finals tomorrow, where they race for the hardware.
Wrestler Dorothy Yeats of Montreal came out on top of her repechage this afternoon and has a shot at bronze against Sweden’s Jenny Fransson at 5:45.
The defending Olympic champions in men’s volleyball are moving on – at the expense of Canada’s men’s team – who were dominated by Russia in today’s quarter final.
Canada’s equestrian jumping team JUST missed the podium, finishing 4th in today’s final. Canada exited after a final jump-off against bronze medalists, Germany.
Women’s golf opened today and Canada’s uber impressive youngster Brooke Henderson finished four shots back of the clubhouse lead, shooting one under in the first round.
Our women’s soccer team will go for their second straight Olympic bronze on Friday, after yesterday’s heartbreaking semi-final loss to Germany. Canada meets host country Brazil for bronze Friday at noon.
Canada’s medal count stands at 14 – thanks to Derek Drouin – 3 gold, 2 silver and 9 bronze.
