The Blenheim Blades used home ice to their advantage and opened the first ever PJHL season in a familiar fashion – with a win.

Blenheim defeated the Petrolia Flyers by a final of 6-2.

Owen Bateman opened the scoring with the long goal of the first frame, set up by Derek Hueni and Brayden Hopkins. The Blades would score four unanswered including three in the second period from Bryce Broad, Nate Broek and Hopkins. Nick Delyzer and Brayden Seliga added third period markers. Seliga’s was the lone powerplay goal of the game.

The Flyers had six chances to light the lamp with the extra man, but ended up 0 for 6 on the powerplay. Petrolia found the board too little, too late in the third, with goals from Curtis Helps and Jack Hackett. Helps scored the first goal in franchise history.

The contest was the inaugural game for the Petrolia Flyers, formerly playing out of Alvinston.

Owen Bateman, Brayden Hopkins and Nick Delyzer each finished with a goal and an assist. Zack Horvath added two assists in the win. Eric Stewardson made 27 saves for Blenheim.

The Blades are right back at it, playing their first road game in Wheatley on Monday night. Puck drop is 7pm.
