The New Year rang in, and some of the biggest stories of the year, including Bothwell’s fight to save their arena hit the news. Here’s a look back at sports in Chatham-Kent during January 2016.

Dresden Midgets Win Silver Stick – The Dresden Midget hockey team won the Regional “C” Silver Stick. Dresden defeated Lucan 5-1 to win the championship. In round robin and tournament play, Dresden had previously beat Belmont, Lucan and Delhi.

Konecny and Studnicka Traded To Sting – It was the biggest trade of the OHL year. Clachan’s Travis Konecny, captain of the Ottawa 67s, and former Chatham Maroons player Sam Studnicka, an assistant captain with Ottawa, were both traded to the OHL’s Sarnia Sting. Konecny would go on to play in the NHL by year’s end, and Studnicka would lace up in CIS hockey.

Durston Makes Pro Lacrosse Debut – Wallaceburg’s Jordan Durston, who was the 19th overall selection in the 2015 NLL draft, after winning back-to-back Minto Cup’s with with Six Nations Arrows, made his professional lacrosse debut with the Vancouver Stealth, going on to have an exceptional rookie season.

Bothwell Arena On Chopping Block – This was a newsworthy story. Council proposed the closure of Bothwell Arena, which didn’t sit well with Bothwell residents, who rallied to keep it open. Bothwell did such a great job arguing their case, that the arena was later removed from the list of budget cuts.
