U16 Airhawks Win Gold

The Wallaceburg Airhawks U16 girls basketball team won gold this past weekend at a tournament in Guelph.

During Game 1 against the Tecumseh Saints, the Saints pushed the Airhawks with some physical play for 32 minutes. Wallaceburg pulled away at the end for a 58-42 win behind top scorers Megan Mccarter’s 21 and Meghan Zelina with 10.

Game 2 against North Toronto Huskies was a lopsided affair because of the hustle and great team play. The Airhawks led from start to finish with a 64-31 win behind top scorers Megan Mccarter’s 19 and Megan Hitchcock’s 10.

Game 3 versus Guelph CYO was another hard fought game from start to finish. Guelph just didn’t have enough legs to keep up the Airhawks as they pressed and had a lot of transition points. The score was 62-39 with Megan Mccarter and Megan Hitchcock leading the way again with 12 a piece, and Jaime Jenkins chipping in with 10.

Facing the Milton Stags in the gold medal game, the Wallaceburg Airhawks came out on fire to start the game putting up a quick 9 points, but this didn’t last long as the lid was put on the net during the first half.

The girls struggled to put the ball in the net the entire game but managed to still win with a score of 54-37, and top scorers were Megan Mccarter 12, Joelle Tetrault 12 and Legacie Blackbird 10.

This was the first tournament for the Airhawks girls of the year. The team now sits at 6 wins and 0 losses early in the season. The team consists of 4 girls from WDSS, 2 girls from Pain Court, and 1 each from CKSS and John McGregor.
