Red Devils Bolster Roster With Big Trade
With the Jr B lacrosse season one week away, the Wallaceburg Red Devils have stepped up their efforts to make a playoff push after missing the post-season last year.
The Red Devils have announced the acquisition of four big pieces to bolster the club’s depth in their hopes of climbing back on top of the Far West Division.
Wallaceburg has acquired Tyler Brown, Vern Hill, Madisen General and Cole Dezainde, all from Six Nations, and all bringing experience and skill to the floor.
“These are big additions for us,” said assistant coach Jamie Knight. “These guys all come with great skill and they want to be here. It gives us the scoring we need on the left O door and gives us some great depth on the left side.”
Tyler Brown is an offensive threat from the left side, who had 24 goals and 35 assists (59 points) in 17 games for Akwesasne last season. Brown added six points in two playoff games with Guelph and led the Under-19 tournament in goals last year.
Vern Hill is described as a transitional D-man on the left side who brings versatility to the Red Devils floor. Hill played at Genesee Junior College in the US and was impressive in the U-19 tournament as well.
The 21-year-old Madison General is making a return to lacrosse after missing last season with a broken hand. Devils staff say the left side attacker is fitting in well with the Wallaceburg squad and should gel immediately with a new opportunity.
Multi-sport athlete Cole Dezainde is known well from his time with the Chatham Maroons. Knight believes Dezainde could be the sleeper in the deal and may be relied upon to play some D.
All four additions were acquired for cash considerations.
The Red Devils have a health supply of returning players from last season, including their top eight scorers: Evan Mathany (87 PTS), Cory Lucier (84 PTS), Kyle Dawson (56 PTS), Parker Gilhuly (53 PTS), Carter Hastings (30 PTS), Brendan Johnston (21 PTS), Brock Daugherty (19 PTS) and Ryan Noel (14 PTS)
Wallaceburg opens the regular season in London on April 20th. The Red Devils home opener is Saturday, April 22 when they host Elora at Memorial Arena.
The Devils host their annual exhibition black vs white game at Bothwell Arena Thrusday (April 13) at 7pm.
