The U16 Wallaceburg Airhawks took their game to Ottawa this past weekend, capturing provincial gold

The U16 girls ended up in division 2 ranked 6th in the division which put them 14 overall in the province out of 60+ teams competing at provincials.

Wallaceburg’s first game was going to be a tough one against 2nd ranked Blessed Sacrament out of Hamilton. Blessed had already beat Wallacecburg once this season in another tournament. The game was an extremely close low scoring and physical battle from the tip off. Wallaceburg took the win with a 38-35 final score. Megan Mccarter lead with 8 points and 16 rebounds, Legacie Blackbird 7 points, Megan Hitchcock 7 points and 15 rebounds, Joelle Tetrault 7 points and 12 rebounds.

The second game, the Airhawks came up against the 3rd ranked Caledon Cougars. This game was just as physical or more than the first, with the Airhawks losing a key piece to there 8 womman squad to a concussion. The Wallaceburg Airhawks took the win 44-34 but took a loss going down to 7 players early in the 3rd quarter. Leading the way once again was Megan Mccarter with 16 points and Legacie Blackbird with 12 points.

The third game was for all the marbles, win and you set yourself up in the gold medal game. Wallaceburg came up against 7th ranked Brockville and the game was never in doubt from the opening tip to the final buzzer. The Airhawks took the win 65-37. Leading the way this game was Meghan Zelina with 18 points and 2 rebounds, Megan Mccarter 13 points and 3 rebounds, Legacie Blackbird 10 points 6 rebounds, Joelle Tetrault 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The gold medal game was not going to be an easy task as this would be yet another game with only 7 players. The gold medal game was going to be against the 8th ranked Mississauga Jayhawks. The crowd for both teams were loud and at times you couldn’t hear the refs blow the whistle. This game was tight through 3 quarters with quarter scores of 8-7 Airhawks, 23-17 Airhawks, and 40-28 to end the third. Then 7 strong flexed there muscles and went to town on the Jayhwks, with the Airhawks winning 61-35 for gold. Leading the way Megan Mccarter 22 points 9 rebounds, and Meghan Zelina 15 points 11 rebounds.
