Wallaceburg Sting Season ‘Premier’ May 5
The Wallaceburg Sting men’s soccer team has a heck of a job to do if they plan on improvement from last season.
The Sting open the 2017 season Friday, May 5th on the road in Tillsonburg, in Premier League play, following the most successful year in team history.
Wallaceburg capped off an historic season with a 2016 league championship, promotion to the Premier League of the Western Ontario Soccer League and captured the First Division scoring title, thanks to the brilliant play of Casey McGee.
Long-time Sting player Mark Foster says the Sting are ready to perform in the premier league.
“One of (our) goals would be to prove that we belong in the league,” Foster recently told 99.1 CKXS. “We probably don’t expect to win the league because there are a lot of really strong teams, but a realistic goal would be to finish in the upper half of the league and try to win one of the cups we are entered in this year. We had a really good season last year, both on and off the field. All the guys on the team are really close and we had a great mix of different aged players, so hopefully we can build off of the chemistry we all had.”
The Sting are set to play in both the League Cup and Division Cup.
Chris Baertson is returning as head coach, and Kevin Babcock is the General Manager of the team.
The Sting play their home opener Friday, May 12th, welcoming the Chatham Express to Wallaceburg’s Kinsmen Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:45.
