Lakers Win After Coaching Staff Steps Down
It was a night of highs and lows for the Wallaceburg Lakers.
On the ice, the Wallaceburg Lakers snapped a 15 game losing skid Wednesday, defeating the Mooretown Flags 3-1.
Off the ice however, the Lakers endured their second coaching change of the season, as the Hartig family, who had been overseeing the Lakers’ bench, stepped down.
“I regret to inform you that our coaching staff, led by John Hartig Sr have made the decision to resign due to personal reasons. We wish them well in their future endeavours and thank them for their service,” wrote Wallaceburg Lakers President Paul Turner.
“Our players are important to us and in order to give them stability and support, our general manager Ritch Kanally and assistant general manager Darryl Lucio, will become their interim coaches until other arrangements can be made,” he continued.
“We value our players and want to give them the best coaches possible, to develop them as mature athletes, on and off the ice.”
Kanally and Lucio were on the bench for Wednesday’s win.
On the ice, Austin Bentley opened the scoring for the Lakers on the powerplay, scoring his first with the Wallaceburg Lakers, after the team acquired the veteran presence earlier this season.
After Mooretown tied things up in the second period, the Lakers continued to ride the spectacular netminding of Travis Moore, who made 40 saves in the win, keeping the game tied heading into the third.
Wallaceburg’s Ryan MacAlpine opened the third period scoring with what would eventually stand as the game winning goal.
Matt Tourigny provided an insurance marker later in the third, as the Lakers picked up their second win of the season.
Wallaceburg plays a pair of road games this weekend travelling to Blenheim on Saturday, and Amherstburg on Sunday.
