The Wallaceburg Lakers Bantam BB Girls hockey team won International Silver Stick this past weekend in Aurora, Ontario.

The Lakers went 5-0 beating the Gloucester Stars 3-1, Troy Lady Sting (Michigan) 6-1, and Aurora Panthers 3-1 in the round robin.

After receiving a bye into the semi-finals, finishing 1st overall after round robin play, Wallaceburg would face Woolwich Wild, ranked the #1 BB team in Ontario, in the semi-finals. Regulation time could not decide a winner and the teams went to a 5 minute 3 on 3 O/T. With 3:06 left in O/T Ferrah Blackbird buried one to give the Lakers the sudden death win and a trip to the finals.

Wallaceburg would face the Clarington Flames in the finals. Clarington was going to be a tough team to face as they headed into the finals with 0 goals against. Wallaceburg played a strong game dominating most of the play but Clarington’s goalie continued to shut them down. Finally with just 2 minutes left, Eniya Gittens was able to tap in a rebound to put the Lakers on top. Clarington fought hard in the dying minutes, but Wallaceburg proved to be too strong and finished the game as the Silverstick Champions. The goalie pairing of Samara Whiteye and Morgan Gorry also proved to be crucial as they only allowed 3 goals in 5 games.
