The Chatham Maroons filled their second underage card this week, signing 16-year-old defenseman Craig Spence of Chatham.

Spence, who was selected in the 7th round, 128th overall in this years OHL Draft by the Mississauga Steelheads, will help round out the Maroons’ blueline.

“Very excited to announce the signing of 16-year-old defensemen Craig Spence,” said head coach Kyle Makaric. “Craig skates very well and posses and good shot and size on the back end. We are confident that Craig will make the jump to Junior B and achieve success in his role this season. He has hopes on playing in the OHL one day and this upcoming season will be great for his development towards that goal. He is very active and plays the position the way we want to play this year so it is a great fit for player and team.”

Spence led the Alliance in scoring by a defenseman last season while playing for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones Minor Midget ‘AAA’ team, collecting 27 points in 33 regular season games.

The 6’1″ defenseman also played in 4 games this season for the Junior B Chatham Maroons, collecting 2 assists.

Spence’s older brother Grant Spence played for the Chatham Maroons last season, and recently signed to play Junior A for the OJHL’s North York Rangers.

The Chatham Maroons other 16-year-old roster spot was grabbed by Tilbury’s Darby Lemieux this week.
