Since the day Megan McCarter picked up a basketball, she wanted to play at the University level.

That dream is now coming true for the Wallaceburg product, as McCarter has committed to play for the Nipissing University Lakers women’s basketball team next season.

“Ever since I started playing basketball, the only goal I’ve ever really had was to play post secondary,” said McCarter of her commitment to Nipissing.

“So being able to do that feels as though all my hard work is paying off. Sometimes it felt like ‘why am I doing this,’ but every time I’m out on the court I remember, so it’s an unreal feeling being able to play for at least 5 more years.”

McCarter, who stars for the Wallaceburg Airhawks, will be taking the concurrent education program at Nipissing, along with a Bachelors of Health and Physical Education.

McCarter chose Nipissing for a variety of reasons, both on and off the basketball court.

“I chose Nipissing because it was the best fit for me on and off the court,” she said.

“When I went for a tour I got to take a look at what goes on behind the scenes a bit, and I found that everyone was working hard but not one of them didn’t want to be there. That’s really what I was looking for, a team who loves what they’re doing but isn’t afraid to put in the effort that’s needed.”

Nipissing finished last in the OUA East this season with a 3-20 record, but looks to be building for the future as the team welcomes 8 new recruits for next season, including McCarter.

“To be able to share this new experience with women my age and learn and grow with them is really exciting,” she said of the Lakers recruiting class. “Nipissing is also one of the top schools in the province for my program.”

As thrilled as Megan McCarter is to head to Nipissing, her new school will be equally thrilled when she steps on the court next Fall.
