Negri Wins National Gold, Receives Award of Excellence
National Indoor Track & Field Championships at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan earlier this month, winning gold in the 11-year-old girls division by throwing a personal best of 7.05m with the 2.73kg shot-put.
Negri also competed in a new age class and shot-put weight in two separate Minor Track Association
(MTA) meets in Toronto during the month of February, bringing home the gold in both events.
Her success in the 2019 season comes on the heels of a very successful 2018. As a result of her hard
work during the 2018 season, Negri was presented with the Rick Westwood 2018 Athlete of Excellence
award from the MTA at an awards banquet in Etobicoke on February 23. This award was presented to
43 exceptional MTA athletes out of a field of over 3000, ages 7 through 14, and is awarded based on
outstanding performance during the 2018 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
Emma Negri’s 2018 achievements include winning the MTA Tyke Girls Indoor Provincial Championship in shotput, winning the MTA Tyke Girls Outdoor Provincial Championship in shot put as well as the bronze
medal in discus in the MTA Atom Girls Outdoor Provincial Championship. With her personal best throws,
Emma earned entries in the MTA Top Ten Records Book for Tyke Girls in all 3 events.
Emma throws for Blenheim-based Excel Athletics and is coached by her father and former local thrower,
Darren Negri. She is currently busy training for the 2019 MTA Indoor Provincial Championships in Toronto, which is held March 23-24.
