The UA Chatham-Kent Chargers flag football team competed this past weekend in the Argos Cup at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. The team, playing their first games outside of Chatham, went undefeated to win the tournament.

After being greeted by former CFL player Damon Allen, the Chatham-Kent Chargers got started with pool play.

The Chargers tied their first game against Hadfield (Oakville) 6-6.

Game two saw Chatham-Kent play Toronto Flag Football League Team #2 winning 6-2. In game three of pool play the CK squad played the Kingdom Force Football Academy winning 13-0, which had the Chargers finish first in their pool, good enough for a spot in the championship game.

In the championship game Chatham-Kent faced off against the Toronto Flag Football League Team #1 and won that game 28-0, capturing the first ever Argos Cup.

“I couldnt be prouder of these kids, they walked into a major city and confidently brought the championship home like it was theirs all along,” said assistant coach Jason Reynolds, who also runs the Flag Football league in Chatham. “Head Coach Mike Hadden did an outstanding job with the players and I was beyond happy to simply be along for the ride.”

Tournament MVP was Chatham-Kent’s Caleb Roberts.

The UA Chatham-Kent Chargers fotball team includes, Sawyer Emmott, Tayeshawn Hadden, Tezmond Hadden, Jayden Baylis, Caleb Roberts, CJ Roberts, Ryah Hooper, McKenzie Gilhula, Jaxen Baker, and Oshane White. The team is coached by Mike Hadden, and Jason Reynolds.

Reynolds says he expects Chatham to host a similar tournament in the near future, and says the team will definitely be returning to Toronto next year to prove their success was no fluke.

“We are looking forward to heading back to Toronto next year to defend our title,” he said.
