Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association (PWHPA)
Recently the PWHPA was in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for their 4 th Showcase. This showcase was sponsored by Secret Deodorant and was a huge hit for the GTA. There were 6 teams and 6 games. The team captains were Jocelyne Larocque (Canadian Olympian), Natalie Spooner (Canadian Olympian), Melodie Daoust (Canadian Olympian), Kacey Bellamy (American Olympian), Amanda Kessel (American Olympian), and Kendall Coyne Schofield (American Olympian). After Team Kessel took a 3-1 lead after the 1st period, Team Larocque would find their way back and Jamie Lee Rattray (Canadian National player) would win the game 5-4 in OT.
The second game was Team Daoust vs Team Bellamy. A tough battle would have Team Daoust become victorious against Team Bellamy, 6-3. Hilary Knight (American Olympian) would shine in this game. She would score the game’s opening goal from a beauty pass from team captain Daoust and she would add another goal as she rips one pass Team Bellamy’s goalie. Team Daoust goalie Genevieve Lacasse (Canadian Olympian) stood tall during this game making a couple huge saves.
The last game on Saturday was Team Spooner vs Team Coyne. Team Coyne would take an early 2-0 against Team Spooner but St. Thomas local superstar Brittany Howard would cut Team Coyne’s lead in half. She drags Alex Cavallini (Rigsby) out of position and just snipes it low far side. Team Coyne would end up taking the game 6-3 against Team Spooner.
The first game on Sunday was a real nail bitter, Team Kessel vs Team Bellamy. With former Canadian Women’s Hockey League goalie Lauren Dahm putting on an absolute client as she was in the zone and got the first shutout of the Showcase. Team Kessel would win 1-0.
The second game on Sunday was Team Coyne vs Team Larocque. Kendall Coyne would lead her team once again as her team would beat Larocque’s 5-2. This game was not streamed via YouTube but on Twitter Live.
The last game of Sunday and the showcase was Team Daoust vs Team Spooner. This game took place at the home of the Ryerson Rams in Toronto. Team Daoust would start off strong and not slow down. Kim Deschenes and Tracy-Ann Lavigne would connect for the opening goal. After letting in that goal Team Spooner goalie Elaine Chuli would be locked in as she stones Melodie Daoust not once but three times in the first. Even though the game would end 8-0 for Team Daoust, Marie-Philip Poulin was her usual amazing self when she scored a beauty goal.
Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL)
The Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League started back up this week and it was one for the history books. The Perth Inferno, who haven’t a game all season would win in dramatic fashion against the Melbourne Ice. The Perth Inferno would take the lead early one and wouldn’t give up until former Canadian soccer Olympian Christina Julien takes her team on her back and scores a short-handed goal, a power play goal, and an even strength to bring her team back into the game. After the Ice would take their first lead of the game Nora Maclaine would score the game tying goal and captain Courtney Moulton would score the game-winner in OT, 6-5. This would be the Inferno’s first win this season!
Russian Women’s Hockey League (ZhHL)
This past weekend the ZhHL had their All-Star game. It was everything that an All-Star game should be. There was some great goals and even better entertainment. After the 1 st the East would lead the West 1-0. Before the 2nd period started 2 players from both East and West competed in a fun shootout. These are the parts of the shootout.
As a tradition of the ZhHL All-Star game the loser must do a dance at center ice that the winning team picked. Since the East would go on to win 3-1 the West completed the Macarena.
