Arenas To Remain Closed, Sports Fields On Reduced Maintenance For Foreseeable Future

If you build it, they will come…unless they’re not allowed that is.

All arenas, soccer fields, tennis courts, pools, and baseball diamonds are likely to remain closed longer than expected across Chatham-Kent according to a report heard by council Monday.

In a cost saving measure by council, which included the closure or reduced maintenance of arenas, sports fields, tennis courts, pools, and more than a dozen other facilities services will save an estimated $2-million for Chatham-Kent.

This effectively means there could be no soccer, baseball, football, rugby, lacrosse, or summer hockey camps in Chatham-Kent this year.

The lone hope is that the Ontario and Canadian government health officials lift restrictions on large gatherings in time to put together a summer season, at which point the fields, which will not see the same level of maintenance this summer, could be prepared for participation.
